Duration-linked Swum orders show a $144.20 median hourly equivalent for eligible 15-minute orders and $122.40 for 30-minute orders—with important limits.

A 15-minute lesson can look inexpensive to a parent and valuable by the instructor's clock. Both can be true.

In a duration-linked subset of successful individual USD orders on Swum, 243 eligible 15-minute orders had a median value of $36.05. That equals $144.20 per scheduled instructional hour when multiplied by four.

For 1,362 eligible 30-minute orders, the median was $61.20—an hourly equivalent of $122.40.

The shorter format carried a higher arithmetic hourly equivalent. It did not automatically produce higher take-home pay.

An hourly equivalent lets unlike durations share a common denominator:

order value ÷ lesson minutes × 60

It helps operators see whether shorter options are being discounted too aggressively. It does not turn an order into profit.

Why shorter time need not mean proportionally lower price

Many costs attach to the appointment, not its minutes:

  • family communication;
  • changing and transition time;
  • payment processing;
  • scheduling administration;
  • setup and equipment;
  • customer acquisition;
  • travel, when applicable.

Cutting a 30-minute lesson to 15 minutes does not cut those costs in half. Linear pricing can therefore punish the shortest format.

The utilization test

Four theoretical 15-minute lessons fit in an hour. Four real lessons may not.

If each transition consumes five minutes, an operator can deliver only three 15-minute lessons in a clean hour. At the observed median order value, that is $108.15 in gross orders—not $144.20. A single gap changes the economics again.

For mobile instructors, the hourly equivalent can be especially misleading. A 15-minute home lesson surrounded by 25 minutes of driving is not a 15-minute unit of work.

Calculate three rates:

  1. Instructional hourly equivalent for price comparison.
  2. Bookable-hour revenue after realistic buffers and gaps.
  3. Working-hour contribution after travel, facility, processing, staff pay and other variable costs.

Why the 15-minute result deserves caution

The 15-minute segment cleared the privacy threshold at exactly five provider accounts, and its middle quartiles were unusually concentrated at the same value. That suggests configuration or provider-mix effects may heavily shape the result.

It is a real platform observation, not a broad market rate. The 30-minute segment spans 22 providers and is more diverse, but remains a first-party order cohort.

The better pricing question

Do not ask only, “What should 15 minutes cost?” Ask:

How much completed, useful instruction can this format reliably deliver per working hour—and what must that hour contribute?

That question connects pedagogy to economics. The right duration must work for the swimmer and for the calendar that sustains the instructor.
