The observed customer base was concentrated in early childhood
Children ages three to four formed the largest age band at 29.2%, followed by ages five to six at 23.6% and ages zero to two at 21.7%. Combined, 74.5% of valid profiles were younger than seven.
That concentration reflects the programs and families using Swum. It is not a national participation rate and should not be used to define the medically or developmentally appropriate age to begin lessons.
Finding 2
Operational design should assume a parent-led customer journey
When most swimmers are young children, the purchasing, scheduling, waiver and communication experience is controlled by a parent or guardian. The adult customer needs clarity even when the child is the service recipient.
Businesses should make sibling management, guardian communication, progress explanations and rescheduling understandable without expecting the swimmer to manage an account.
Finding 3
Older swimmers were present but comparatively uncommon
Ages seven to nine represented 17.4%, ages 10–12 represented 5.7% and ages 13–17 represented 2.3%. These groups are too meaningful to ignore but too small to drive the default experience in this dataset.
Programs serving older beginners, competitive transitions or teenagers should analyze their own mix before copying platform-wide scheduling or messaging patterns.

Methodology
How the benchmark was produced
Swum calculated age from a stored birthday when available and otherwise used the stored age. Only valid ages from zero through 17 were included.
- The production collection group contained 5,093 swimmer-profile documents.
- Invalid, missing and adult ages were excluded, leaving 4,913 profiles.
- No birthday, name, identifier, address or provider-level age segment was emitted.
- Age was calculated at the August 1, 2026 observation boundary.
Operator response
What to do with this finding
- Design parent communication for an audience managing young children and often multiple siblings.
- Segment program reporting by age instead of assuming the platform-wide mix matches every location.
- Keep older-beginner and teen offerings visible even when they are not the largest segment.
- Use authoritative safety and instructional guidance—not this operational dataset—to decide when lessons should begin.
Limitations
What this data cannot establish
- Swum profiles are not a representative sample of all children taking swim lessons.
- Stored age may lag when no birthday was available.
- The dataset measures profile representation, not lesson attendance or lesson frequency by age.
